About the film:
Mary Surratt is among those arrested and charged with conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln. A Yankee lawyer who was coerced into defending her is the only person standing between her and the gallows.

Movie Quote:
“The Bible bears as many interpretations as anything else.”
Frederick Aiken (James McAvoy) The Conspirator (2010)

Bible Quote:
“Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.”
2 Peter 1:20 (KJV)

Commentary:
While what Aiken says is true, it is what he does not say that is most important to remember. People do read many things into the scriptures and tend to interpret it to fit whatever it is they already believe. This does not make their interpretation true or accurate.

The Bible’s testimony of itself is clear. There is no private interpretation that should be forced upon it. It does not matter what any individual thinks a verse of scripture means. This leaves us with two remaining choices. Either the Bible cannot be interpreted, rendering it meaningless and therefore useless; or the Bible must be able to interpret itself.

It is of course the latter that is true and remains the challenge for us today. In order to discover the one true interpretation of the Bible; the one that represents God’s original thought and intent, we must become diligent students of the entire book. It is why He calls us to be “workmen” of the Word.

“Study and be eager and do your utmost to present yourself to God approved (tested by trial), a workman who has no cause to be ashamed, correctly analyzing and accurately dividing [rightly handling and skillfully teaching] the Word of Truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15 (Amplified)

Questions to consider while watching the film:
1. How does one find the true meaning of any scripture? What are the keys to the Bible’s interpretation?

2. Was justice served in the events depicted in the film? Why or why not?
